The mountain gorilla is among the world's most endangered apes with a small portion of the population of the gorillas located in the dense rain forests in south western Uganda ,northern Rwanda and in Eastern Congo.With about 710 gorillas remaining as the world population, Uganda holds half the population of the mountain gorillas (over 370 gorillas ) which can only be found in the impenetrable forest of Bwindi National park and the other gorillas are found in the Virunga ranges which is shared by 3 countries hence three national parks which are Mgahinga national park in Uganda,Virunga national park in Congo and the Volcanoes national park in Rwanda. GORILLA POPULATIONS:The mountain gorillas are divided into two populations with half the population (320-29/706-10) located in Uganda's Bwindi National Park and the remaining gorilla population is located in Rwanda's Virunga Volcanoe ranges which covers national parks like the Mgahinga Gorilla Park located in Uganda,Parc Nationale de Volcanoes in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Congo.
GORILLA THREATS:The threats to the mountain gorillas are many but one of the most common threat would be the risk of disease transmission from humans and that is why Uganda tourist and travel Guide has been able to provide you with some of the gorilla tracking rules and regulations to be followed on a Uganda gorilla safari
GORILLA PERMITS:Gorilla Trekking permits can be booked and paid for in Kampala at UWA's offices or from Kisoro and then made available to you once the gorilla trekking safari begins. It is possible to make an international booking for permits using our email to contact our tour consultant who will then advice you on a date(s) that are available for tracking the mountain gorilla and also fill you in about the gorilla safari permits costs.
UGANDA GORILLA SAFARI PARKS
BWINDI IMPENETRABLE GORILLA NATIONAL PARK:Bwindi national park was gazetted in 1942 and upgraded to Bwindi national park in 1992 fro where it it came to be recognized as a world heritage site. Bwindi in the local lukiga language means impenetrable and this is no lie as the Gorilla park is one of Africa's most ancient rain forests with tangled vegetation and draught ridges .Bwindi is normally cold especially in the morning hours and coldest during July and June with up to 2390mm of rain per year. Bwindi is located in the south west of Uganda, 530 km from Kampala but the park can be reached using several routes which include: From Kampala-Kabale-Kanungu-Buhoma(Bwindi's busiest site), From Kampala-Kabale-Kanungu-Buhoma and so many other routes.
Accommodation in Bwindi National park is available in Buhoma,Bwindi's tourism business center with several camp sites with good services and accommodation facilities.
BWINDI GORILLA GROUPS:There are basically four major gorilla groups with in the park that are tracked on the daily basis and these include the following.
The Mubare group with 16 gorillas and 1 silverback ,The Habinyanja group which has about 23 gorillas with 2silver backs.,The Rushegura group with 9gorillas and 1 silver back ,The latest of all the gorilla groups in Bwindi impenetrable National park is the Nkuringo group which has about 20gorillas and 2silver backs.
MGAHINGA GORILLA PARK
This is the major tourist activity in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park which is a second home for the mountain gorilla. In the park there is one habituated gorilla family. It consists of 9 members, 2 silverbacks, 3 adult females, 2 juveniles and 2 infants. Tracking from this park is easier given that this habituated family is no longer quite mobile since it has established its base at Nyakagezi.Apat from the Gorillas other wildlife found in the park include bushbuck, elephant, leopard, aardvark, honey badger, jackal and a lot of bird life.
GORILLA TREKKING RULES AND REGULATIONS
Gorilla tracking allows only limited number of tourists to track the different groups of the gorillas per day and that is 8 people are allowed to track a group of gorillas. There fore this means that each group of the gorillas can be tracked by only 8 people per day.
The gorilla permits are sold at the UWA headquarters in Kampala. The gorilla tracking briefings start at exactly 8:00 am in the morning and it is provided by the UWA officials and the Gorilla trackers directors. There fore this means that the tourists should sleep within the park or around the park so as to be able to track the gorillas.
Gorilla trekking Duration:The activity can take long depending on the current location of the gorillas with in the forest. However it can take 6-7 hours in the forest so tourists are encouraged to move with their packed lunch
Tourists are encouraged to ensure physical fitness, Carry jungle boots and rain jackets because the park is often wet, rain gears, sunscreens, insect repellant and this is because the weather in the forest is unpredictable.
When you are with the mountain gorillas keep a minimum of 7 meters (21 feet) from the Gorillas as this is a measure to protect the gorillas from any human disease transmission.You must also stay in a tight group when near the gorillas and you should not eat or drink while near the mountain gorilla to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Flash photography is not allowed and in case of a gorilla charge just follow the guides example and crouch down slowly,don't run away or look in the gorilla's eyes."Please do not touch the gorillas,they are wild animals" and after the visit,Keep your voices down until you are 200 meters away .Please don't throw rubbish in the Gorilla parks and if you are feeling ill or having a contagious disease ,please volunteer and stay behind and as soon as you get well an alternative gorilla tracking expedition will be arranged and tourists should not forget to respect the limit imposed on the gorilla tracking time.
